Brig Gen Anup Jung Thapa

Brig Gen Anup Jung Thapa was born in 1970 and entered the then Royal Nepalese Military Academy (RNMA) in March 1989 with SN 28 Officer Cadet Basic Course. He was commissioned into Sri Devi Dutta Battalion from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) in 1991. As a young Officer, he achieved a record Distinction - D.I. grade in the General Purpose Machine Gun Course and is also a qualified Paratrooper and Commando. He has also undertaken the U.S. Army Civil Affairs, SF Instructor Training and Infantry Mortar Leader Courses while topping both the Nepali Army Company Commander, Company Commander and Staff Courses. A graduate of the UK Joint Services Advanced Command and Staff Course and the Indian Army Junior and Senior Command Courses, he was a 'Superior Graduate' of the U.S. Army War College AY19 Course.

A Distinguished International Honor Graduate of the US Army Special Forces Qualification Course,Brig Gen Thapa was also the founding commander of the first operational NA Ranger company. Having trained them, he led them on operations in 31 different districts across Nepal. He subsequently served as the third CO of the NA Mahabir Battalion (Ranger) and as the first Commander of the Mahabir Ranger Regiment.

Brig Gen Thapa served as the Deputy Operations Officer of NEPBATT 31 in UNIFIL (Lebanon) from 1996 - 97, and as Commanding Officer (CO) of the first Special Operations Task Force (Force Reserve), UNAMID, Sudan from 2009 to 2010. A founder member of the Birendra Peace Operations Training Center (BPOTC), he subsequently served as a Planning Officer and Asia and Middle East (AMET) Team Leader at the Military Planning Service, Office of Military Affairs, UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, UN HQ, New York, from 2012 to 2014 and again for six months in 2016.

Brig Gen Thapa has served in various staff and instructor billets at home and abroad, including tenures at the Office of the Military Assistant to the Chief of Army Staff, Operational Doctrine Writing Task Force, the NA Integrated Army Training Centre Concept Development Team and the Nepali Army School. His previous tenure at this Academy was as a Captain (Instructor) from 1997 to 2000.

Brig Gen Thapa commanded both the No. 28 Brigade and the NA Special Forces Brigade. He served as the first Chief of Staff (COS) of the newly established Eastern Command HQ before assuming command of the Nepali Military Academy (NMA) on 31 March, 2022.

Brig Gen Thapa's studied at the St. Xavier's School, Godavari and Jawalakhel, Nepal and The Indian Air Force School, New Delhi, India. His academic qualifications include Master’s Degrees in History from Tribhuwan University, Nepal,  Defence Studies from King’s College, London and  Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. Among other Nepalese and Foreign Awards, Brig Gen Thapa has been decorated with the Nepal Tara IV, Gorkha Dakshin Bahu III and the Battlefield Commendation Medal whilst in service with UNIFIL and subsequently on counterinsurgency operations in Nepal. He has also been awarded the Sri Prabala Jana Sewa Shree.

He and his wife Bhabana are blessed with daughter Aashma and son Tejus.
